A Mission Rooted in Experience and Change

Hope Without Harm is an educational nonprofit dedicated to improving safety, transparency, and accountability in fertility care. We work to reduce preventable risk in in vitro fertilization (IVF), support families impacted by fertility challenges, and promote practices and policies that help clinics deliver reliable, responsible care.

Who we are

In late 2019, singer-songwriter Alexander Cardinale and his wife, Daphna Cardinale, a licensed psychotherapist, welcomed their second daughter into the world. At the same time, the Cardinales had just moved their growing family to the Los Angeles suburbs, with Alexander’s latest single climbing the radio charts. But just as they were settling into this exciting new chapter, their lives were upended by an unimaginable revelation.

A few months after their beloved baby girl’s birth, they discovered a life-altering IVF mix-up: she was not biologically theirs. Their embryo had been accidentally switched, and another couple’s embryo had been transferred into Daphna. This meant that their birth daughter was genetically connected to another family, and, as fate would have it, their biological daughter had been born to the other couple.

Faced with the impossible, both families made the extraordinary choice to blend their lives, ensuring that both girls would grow up as sisters and remain deeply connected to all the people who loved them. The experience profoundly shifted Alexander’s perspective. He completely stepped away from his rising music career to focus entirely on his family and their collective healing journey.

Now, years later, the Cardinales have found a renewed sense of purpose. Daphna continues to work in private practice, and enjoys supporting individuals navigating the emotional challenges of infertility. Newly inspired, Alexander completed his Master of Science in Psychology. Together, they are committed to advocating for the strongest safety standards and regulatory oversight for the IVF industry, so that no family has to endure a similar experience.

Why We Exist

IVF is an incredible medical advancement that has helped millions of families build their lives. At the same time, most people don’t realize that the systems governing IVF safety (how embryos are tracked, verified, and managed) are not unified, enforceable, or consistently applied across clinics in the United States. This lack of consistent oversight can allow preventable errors to occur, even in well-intentioned settings. When mistakes happen, the emotional, ethical, and practical consequences are profound. Our work is focused on building clarity, supporting families, and helping shape practices that reduce avoidable risk.

Our Approach

Educate
We help families understand where systemic gaps exist and what safety practices are possible.

Advocate
We support practical policies and standards that strengthen IVF safety without undermining clinical innovation.

Collaborate
We work with clinicians, advocates, regulatory partners, and policymakers who share the goal of the safest reproductive care.

Empower
We want to give patients tools, language, and confidence to engage care teams with clarity and respect.

Our Values

Safety First
Minimizing avoidable risk is essential. Family care deserves thoughtful systems, not guesswork.

Transparency
Patients have a right to information about how their care is managed.

Accountability
Standards matter. Systems that fall short should be improved, not hidden.

Collaboration
Meaningful progress comes from shared understanding, not confrontation.

Our Mission

We envision a future where IVF clinics operate with clear, consistent, and transparent safeguards, where families can pursue fertility care with confidence and where systemic risk is actively reduced rather than unknowingly tolerated.
